Haddon Library Summer Works 2025
What's going on in the Haddon Library?
As many of our regular users will know, the Haddon Library has had a bit of an exciting time recently when it comes to water leaks, failing guttering and roof issues. However, we finally have a team of expert contractors and architects who are going to help us fix things.
This means is that the Haddon Library will be experiencing varying levels of disruption over the summer period. As any large project like this can evolve over time, we want to share what we know so far so to help folks be more informed and aware of what's going on. We will endeavour to update this page when we get any new information.
Current timetable of works
(Last updated 30 July 2025)
- The Haddon Library will be closed from Monday 28 July - Wednesday 31 July (inclusive). We hope to reopen as normal on Friday 1 August.
- Scaffolding will be built on the front of the Haddon Library (side facing the main road) starting the week beginning 21 July 2025. It is expected that this will take around 2-3 weeks to complete. There will be mid-to-loud noise from the tools being used and activities associated with building lots of metal scaffolding.
- The McBurney Room will be out-of-bounds from 21 July onwards. We will run a fetching service during this time so if you require any material kept in this room, please ask a member of the team for further help.
- Some work will also be taking place in the main Reading Room so expect some parts of this space to be cordoned off and some of our shelving to be covered in plastic sheeting for protection. Again, please ask a member of the team for help with accessing material from a protected area of the Library.
The Haddon Library will remain open as much as possible over the summer period but we recommend that you bring earplugs or noise-cancelling earphones to reduce any noise-related distruption while you work in our spaces.
Some works may generate unexpected dust so if you have any respiratory sensitivities, we recommend that you take appropriate precautions while in the Library.
Other disruption
The Department of Earth Sciences has office space above the Haddon Library. This space is being refurbished over the summer so there will be noise from these works.
You can expect hammering and other noise coming from our very high ceiling in the main Reading Room.
Please note that these works are completely outside of our control.
